Empathy Atlas: An Immersive Journey Through Black Migration Histories

Empathy Atlas is an immersive exploration into the migration histories of Black communities, beginning with journeys related to the Underground Railroad. By focusing on personal narratives, this project seeks to build empathy through interactive storytelling, bringing the emotions, resilience, and experiences of Black families to the forefront.

As part of Empathy Atlas, Clinton is developing Empathy Data Models, an Empathy Visualization Library, and an Empathy Data Exploration Guide. Together, these tools help transform data into powerful storytelling resources, allowing audiences to engage deeply with Black migration histories.

Goals

  • Increase empathy and understanding of Black migration histories through personal narratives.

  • Develop Empathy Data Models to structure immersive, human-centered data.

  • Create an Empathy Visualization Library for interactive storytelling.

  • Produce an Empathy Data Exploration Guide to support future research and engagement.

Black At Work: Documenting and Exploring Black Professionals’ Experiences

Black At Work is an innovative research project focused on capturing the lived experiences of Black professionals across various industries. By interviewing 100 Black professionals, Clinton aims to document both the challenges and triumphs of working while Black, highlighting the systemic barriers that exist in workplaces and the strength and impact of Black employees.

This project provides a space for Black voices, shedding light on issues of bias, exclusion, and underrepresentation. Black At Work also serves as a platform to foster discussions on navigating problematic workplace environments and advancing equity across sectors.

  • Document and amplify the experiences of Black professionals.

  • Highlight systemic workplace barriers and resilience among Black employees.

  • Create resources and insights to guide bias interruption strategies and equity initiatives in myriad sectors.

NorthStar of GIS: A Nonprofit for Racial Equity in Geo-Fields

Co-founded by Clinton, NorthStar of GIS is dedicated to advancing racial justice within geo-fields, particularly by increasing Black representation. NorthStar fosters an inclusive environment in geographic sciences and technology through programs like Horizons, Bridge, and Telescope. These initiatives provide pathways for Black professionals, support educational opportunities, and amplify Black stories in geospatial fields.

NorthStar’s mission is to build a racially-just geography, ensuring that GIS and related technologies serve all communities fairly. Through advocacy, mentorship, and education, NorthStar is redefining what it means for geography to be equitable and inclusive.
