About Clinton G Johnson

Clinton G Johnson (he/him) is a National Geographic Explorer navigating the intersections of racial justice, geography, and technology. With over two decades dedicated to geospatial innovation and advocacy, Clinton uses storytelling to drive change and foster empathy in geo-fields, ensuring representation and justice for Black communities and beyond.

A Journey Defined by Justice and Innovation

Clinton Johnson began his career in geospatial technology in Philadelphia, where he pioneered the city’s first enterprise GIS platforms. As Philadelphia’s first Chief Enterprise Architect, he redefined how GIS can serve communities, setting the stage for his life’s work: empowering underrepresented voices and building equitable spaces within geographic fields.

Now, as the Racial Equity and Social Justice Lead at Esri, Clinton has established a framework for leveraging GIS to confront and dismantle systems of oppression. He continues to explore innovative ways to use data for social impact through his work with NorthStar of GIS, a nonprofit he founded to advocate for racial justice and Black representation in geo-fields.

  • Co-founded by Clinton, NorthStar is a nonprofit that amplifies Black voices in geo-fields and advocates for antiracist practices in geography and GIS.

A Vision for Empathy-Driven Geospatial Innovation

Clinton Johnson envisions a world where geography is an inherently just discipline, representing all communities equitably. By pushing boundaries in geo-innovation and storytelling, he seeks to continue elevating Black histories and fostering belonging for underrepresented groups in the geospatial field. Clinton’s future work aims to inspire others to see the power of empathy and equity in shaping a more inclusive world.
